  • Ambrook hosted an event with a sketch artist and celebrated tomatoes. (H/t Halle). How cute are these?! The ceiling is so high for events these days.

  • If you want a masterclass in bending the world to your will, talk to an executive assistant. I (Brie) met a crew of particularly excellent EAs this weekend and was quickly reminded what sheer forces they are. They describe “getting someone from a hard no to a ‘fine’” as a drug and they have the tactics to prove it. Their stories are intentionally undocumented for the world wide web to see, but that makes them all the more thrilling to hear live… If you’re looking for a dash of get shit done inspiration, look no further than your closest EA.
  • Meme culture as onboarding. I (Cam) have dinner with a fantastic group of C-suite women every couple months or so. One of my favorite tips from the last get together - from one who runs a good deal of the show at a unicorn many times over: “We just onboarded a new director, and immediately added her to a meme Slack channel with two more of us. It’s the best way to say, ‘hey we know this place is ridiculous, you’re among friends.’” Instant sanity check and support in your first week? Yes to this.
  • When to make noise about a launch? This is a framework I (Cam) have been kicking around like a marble seeing if it cracks, and it hasn’t yet. When to be vocal about a company launch? Do you need customers? Investors? Candidates? If not, then don’t. Have been talking to a number of companies itching to just get it out there because of competition, their investors asked them to, or they just feel like they’ve been doing something for a while without saying anything. Even though they just raised, don’t have that many open roles, or actually can’t support a ton of inbound (because they’re compute crunched or otherwise). You only get so many bites at this apple! Maybe just one. Save it for when you have your nets cast to catch all the people who’ll want to help you!
  • Think Different for Apple Employees in 1998. A friend got their hands on one and shared it. When Apple launched the best marketing campaign of all time, this is what he gave to employees to hold in their hands. The message was simple, and so prescient: it’s not enough for a company to have a beloved product. They have to stand for something bigger.

  • Ode to the well-loved space. Last week, Brie and I visited an office that is just about to be moved out of. You could feel it bursting at the seams. The sized-down desks, literal shoulder-to-shoulder action. People were taking calls in the kitchen, the weird spot under the stairs, balancing their laptops on their knees, cross-legged on the sidewalk just outside. There’s something so lovely about this time. You see it in the cork board filled with polaroids of early employees (clearly asked to turn around and wave randomly all ✌️ and 🙈), you see it in the way everyone passes each other plates for lunch in the too-small buffet corner, the way they drape themselves on window sills and banisters for an overflowing all hands. It got us thinking, there are so many office-warmings, why not more move-out parties? A moment to consider what went down in this place and thank it for what it contained. If you’re doing it right, you’re not getting your deposit back anyway.
Who else should we write about? Our favorite thing to do is to meet companies that have strong cultures, learn as much as we can about what makes them them, and see what they’re really like when you lift the lid. Who would you be interested to read about? We’re making a list.
